Cleveland was eliminated from the playoffs on Tuesday as the Indiana Pacers clinched their second-round series, four games to one. That was not the ending Cavs fans expected after their team opened the playoffs as the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference.
Teams such as the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers and Houston Rockets – all of which made the playoffs this season – are expected to be in on the chase for the 28-year-old New York native.

Cavs’ Mitchell Could Be The NBA’s Biggest Trade Chip This Offseason
Given his 539-game average of 24.7 points per game on 44.9% shooting in eight NBA seasons (five with Utah, three with Cleveland), there’s good reason why Mitchell could be the prime trade target this NBA offseason. The 13th overall pick in the 2017 Draft has racked up 51.9 win shares in his esteemed career.
The main issue for Ohio’s NBA team, perhaps changing Ohio sports betting odds next season, is the hefty salary cap space that Mitchell and his backcourt partner Darius Garland command. The latter has an even heftier $36.725 million cap hit.
Luckily for general manager Mike Gansey, there are plenty of teams out there that would gladly give up ample draft capital (or NBA level talent) to acquire a player of Mitchell’s level. A deal could help the club alleviate its salary cap woes and get younger to boot.
Knicks, Lakers, and Rockets Among Top Suitors
With that in mind, the teams that hoops fans should keep an eye on are squads such as the Knicks (+550), Lakers (+800) and Rockets (+1100). All three have shown a propensity towards making splashy trades that are suited for their “win now” roster construction and boost their NBA betting odds.
In New York, Mitchell could finally play for his hometown team while complementing a roster that’s one win away from the NBA Finals as is. The team is led by one of the league’s most esteemed head coaches in Tom Thibodeau. As of May 14, the Knicks lead the Boston Celtics 3-1 in their second-round series and have +550 odds at bet365 Ohio Sportsbook to win the NBA title.
Mitchell could also plug into one of the NBA’s brightest franchises, in the Rockets, who saw their year-over-year win total increase by 11 under second-year head coach Ime Udoka in 2024-25. Houston has young talent, led by upstart guards Jalen Green and Alperen Senguin.
Mitchell could wind up on another roster that’s partly through an existing rebuild, such as the situations in San Antonio or Chicago. He also could stay put, most likely if the Cavs find another way to alleviate their cap worries.
But our hypothetical money is on a big-market club splashing out the capital to acquire the veteran guard this offseason – we also have +135 ofdds that he stays put or goes to a team off of our board.
Operators such as BetMGM Ohio Sportsbook will no doubt have futures wagers on the 2025-26 NBA season as soon as these playoffs end.
